On the first Monday of the year, 5 January, StepChange Debt Charity had its busiest day in more than a year, as 800 clients went through debt advice, which is higher than any day in 2025.

The Ombudsman plans to resolve 245,000 cases in 2026/27, as it works through existing stock levels, of which 60,000 will be motor finance commission cases. The remaining cases will be non-motor finance complaints, such as insurance, investments, pensions and banking.
