Interest rate calculator

Following a consultation last summer, the FOS announced that the default interest rate applied to some awards they direct financial service firms to make is being revised to track the Bank of England’s base (average) rate +1. That change came into effect and be applied to all new cases referred to our service on and after 1 January 2026. The interest calculator can be access via the link.

BoE Statistics
BoE Money and Credit statistics – November

The Bank of England (BoE) has published its latest Money and Credit statistics for the month of November. The key figures highlight that:

  • net mortgage approvals for house purchase fell by 500 to 64,500. By contrast, approvals for remortgaging rose by 3,200 to 36,600 in November.
  • net borrowing of consumer credit by individuals increased to £2.1 billion in November from £1.7 billion in October. Within this, net borrowing through credit cards was £1.0 billion in November, up from £0.7 billion in October. Net borrowing through other forms of consumer credit (such as car dealership finance and personal loans) slightly increased in November, to £1.1 billion from £1.0 billion.

The Money Charity Statistics
December 2025

The Money Charity has published its statistics for December. The figures highlight that

  • inflation was 3.2%
  • the average credit card debt per UK household was £2,660 in October
  • the total unsecured debt per UK adult was £4,352
  • the total debt, secured and unsecured, per UK household was £66,772.
