The FCA is consulting on changes to the scope and proportionality of the Consumer Duty. The regulator has also given a short update on its review of the High-Cost Short-Term Credit price cap.

FCA Publication: FCA - CP26/19: CP26/23 Consumer Duty: scope and proportionality

The FCA is consulting on a package of changes to its rules and non-Handbook guidance to:

  • remove business with non-UK customers from the Duty’s scope
  • make it clearer where the Duty applies and where it doesn’t
  • clarify when and how firms can rely on each other when they work together in distribution chains, and how they can apply the Duty more proportionately
  • explain the interaction between the Duty and other product governance rules.

FCA Speech: Shaping the future of the credit market – the road ahead

FOS Report: Charging professional representatives

One year after the introduction of charging professional representatives, the Ombudsman has seen a substantial reduction in low-quality, withdrawn and abandoned complaints—almost 27,000 fewer than the previous year—while the uphold rate for professionally represented cases has increased, suggesting representatives are submitting better-evidenced and more carefully considered complaints.

BoE Statistics: Money and Credit statistics – May

The Bank of England (BoE) has published its latest Money and Credit statistics for the month of May. The key figures highlight that:

  • Net mortgage approvals for house purchases decreased to 56,200 in May, below an average of 63,300 over the previous six months. Approvals for remortgaging also decreased, to 33,300 in May, from 51,200 in April.
  • Net borrowing of consumer credit by individuals remained largely unchanged, when compared to April at £1.7 billion in May.

Money Charity Statistics: Money Statistics - June

The Money Charity has published its statistics for June. The figures highlight that:

  • inflation was 2.8%
  • the average credit card debt per UK household was £2,742 in April
  • the total unsecured debt per UK adult was £4,489
  • the total debt, secured and unsecured, per UK household was £67,707.
