Social Metrics Commission Report 2019

A new report published by the Social Metrics Commission (SMC) highlights the scale of the challenge facing new Prime Minister Boris Johnson when it comes to tackling poverty across the UK. The report reveals that 4.5 million people are more than 50% below the poverty line, and 7 million people are living in persistent poverty.

The report is an update on its 2018 publication proposing a new measure of poverty. Following the Government’s announcement that it would develop experimental national statistics based on the approach.
