Industry News | 04/03/19

  • 86% of UK private investors have described themselves as ‘confident’
  • Investors have around £387,000 in investable assets, up 31% compared to 2018
  • 51% view Brexit as an ‘opportunity’ for their investment pot
  • Availability of debt finance is biggest concern followed by higher interest rates.

An overwhelming 86% of UK private investors have described themselves as ‘confident’ in regards to their current investment confidence levels, with one in six (16%) claiming to be ‘very confident’. This is according to new research* by Master Investor Ltd. (‘Master Investor’), the UK based investment media and events company that delivers independent, financial commentary and analysis to UK private investors and traders.

The respondents, who were on average 54 years old and in the majority, either self-directed or ISA investors, claimed to have around £387,000 in investable assets for 2019 which was up 31% compared to 2018.

The research revealed that the majority (51%) view Brexit as an ‘opportunity’ for their investment pot, with just 15% viewing it as a ‘disaster’. Indeed, nearly one in five (17%) currently hold UK blue chip equities and 15% UK small caps in their portfolios, the most popular assets for respondents. This compared to 13% who currently hold international equities.

When asked about the risks to their investment appetite for the UK, respondents suggested that the availability of debt finance was the biggest concern, followed by higher interest rates. Currency volatility, international political volatility and a no-deal Brexit were third, fourth and fifth respectively. Rather surprisingly, a global economic slowdown and a Corbyn government in power were the bottom two concerns affecting investment appetite for the UK.

James Faulkner, Master Investor, commented on the research: “The research clearly shows that despite ongoing economic uncertainty and market volatility, investors are overwhelmingly confident about their investments. Brexit is seen as an opportunity not a disaster for investors and they are backing UK companies, both large and small. We were surprised however to see such little concern for a change in UK government or a more general economic slowdown.”
Master Investor organises the UK’s leading annual event for private investors. The Master Investor Show will be held on 6th April 2019 in London and will open its doors to more than 5,000 private investors. Attendees can learn from expert speakers on how to make the most of savings, talk directly to CEOs of companies they can invest in and hear leading entrepreneurs, investors and fund managers speak about future trends and opportunities.

James Faulkner continues: “There has arguably never been a more interesting time to invest than now. We are committed to providing as much support as we can to private investors through our events, free monthly magazine and online community. We are looking forward to welcoming a record number of attendees to our event on 6th April which will give us further insight into the interesting investment trends for the coming year.”
