Credit card debt has surged to a record following a decade-long borrowing binge by families. Britons owe a total of £72.9billion on their cards, according to figures from the Bank of England. Overall consumer debt – cards, overdrafts, personal loans and car finance but not mortgages – stands at an all-time high of £217.3 billion.
